Bukuru Anaclet Wins Two Prestigious National Fellowships

It has been a good couple of months for UVA Chemistry graduate student Bukuru Anaclet. In March it was announced he had been awarded a GEM fellowship from the National GEM Consortium which includes an internship with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Then, in April, he learned he was being awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.

Tangi is from Richmond Virginia, but his family immigrated from the pacific island of Tonga. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University for undergrad. He is pursuing a PhD in chemistry and interested in the field of inorganic chemistry and clean energy applications. He enjoys road trips, trying new restaurants and weight lifting. His favorite food is sushi or a good steak.

Bukuru Anaclet

November 24, 2021 -- Shen-Wei Yu

Bukuru was born in Tanzania and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Pomona College in 2021 with a B.A in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics. While at Pomona, he conducted research with Pierre Darancet at Northwestern University Materials Research Science and Engineering Center on functionalization of two-dimensional materials. He then joined the Zhang group in 2021 as a GEM and NSF graduate research Fellow. His current research is focused on polymer upcycling into value-added products and the thermocatalytic reduction of CO2.
